There are two main kinds of
international organizations:
- International nongovernmental organizations or INGOs are non-governmental organizations which operate internationally. Examples in this category include international non-profit organizations, such as Doctors without Borders, and international corporations or multinationals like Toyota Motors.
- Intergovernmental organizations, also known as international governmental organizations or IGOs are primarily made up of sovereign states. Notable examples include the United Nations (UN),or the European Union, which is an example of a supranational organization.
Take note that the United Nations uses the term
intergovernmental organization instead of
international organization for clarity's sake.
